Treatment of Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a degenerative condition. Once the disease has set in, there is no known method of reversing it. However, there are several remedies for the treatment and management of the symptoms of spinal stenosis.

15 Remedies for Spinal Stenosis

  • Losing weight. Losing and maintaining healthy body weight reduces the pressure exerted on the spinal column.
This relieves pain and prevents further damage from being inflicted on the spinal cord and the nerves.
  • Wearing a lumbasacral support. This is a special type of corset that is available at pharmacies and shops selling medical supplies. This support prevents movements that cause pain and helps to ease pain when walking or exercising.
  • NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) for relieving inflammation
  • Oral steroid medications that are anti-inflammatory
  • Acupuncture is used to relive painful symptoms and stimulate the natural healing process. It involves placing pressure on key pressure points to stimulate healing in the regions affected by spinal stenosis.
  • Massage to the back and areas affected by spinal stenosis eases pain. Massage also helps to reduce tension in muscles in these regions as well as increase their flexibility making them better able to deal with pressure that may otherwise have been placed on the spinal column.
  • Magnet therapy works by easing pain and stimulating the natural healing process
  • Epidural injections ease pain and help in the management of inflammation
  • A modification in activities helps to ease pain and discomfort as well as reduce damage to the spinal cord and nerves. Activity modification may include bed rest. This may also slow down the progression of the disease.
  • Cortisone injections help to alleviate inflammation
  • Prolotherapy involves the injection of dextrose directly into the damaged tendon, ligament or joint. This stimulates inflammation in the damaged area and thus increases the blood supply to the area. More nutrients are transported to the site of damage as a result bringing with them collagen which is used in the formation of tendons and ligaments.
  • Use of natural herbs such as prime rose and aloe vera
  • Use of supplements such as glucosamine
