Spinal Stenosis Treatment in France
France has been at the forefront of medical development with various surgical procedures and treatments originating from the nation in the past. This still remains true as new medical techniques continue to be developed and adopted to modern medicine. Thousands of spinal stenosis patients from various parts of the world are known to seek treatment in France every year as a result of the wide variety of treatment options available.
The treatment of spinal stenosis in France is similar to other developed countries in that patients are started off on conservative treatment regimes. These conservative treatments may include physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy and medications. If these treatments should fail, a more aggressive approach is adopted. This will normally involve a surgical procedure.
Traditional surgical procedures such as decompression and spinal fusion were used widely. However, owing to the loss of motion following the procedures, the development of less invasive techniques was viewed as necessary. Popular surgical treatments used in France for the treatment of spinal stenosis include the use of the X-Stop device and the Dynesys.
Stenosis Treatment: Dynesys System
The Dynesys system is popular within Europe and some other parts of the world but is yet to be approved for use within the US. The system is used to stabilize segments within the spinal column without the involvement of the facet joints or the intervertebral discs. The system facilitates load sharing within the spinal column, reducing the amount of pressure on the intervertebral discs. The discs are therefore able to regain their original height. The Dynesys system involves the insertion of pedical screws into the posterior spine segment. The entire dynesys system consists of the pedical screws, stabilizing cords, spacers and face screws.
The X-Stop system only involves the use of a spacer. The X-Stop is placed between the vertebrae therefore relieving pressure on the intervertebral discs as well as the nerve roots. The X-Stop spacer is designed remain implanted permanently. However, in some cases the device may be removed. The X-Stop offers the advantage of retaining motion in the damaged area. Physicians are therefore able to recommend other forms of treatment following the procedure.
