Spinal Stenosis Treatment in Brazil
The spinal stenosis treatment administered in Brazil is dependent on how developed the condition is. Mild spinal stenosis is treated using conservative measures. Severe cases are treated as emergency cases and require more aggressive forms of treatment. In most cases, doctors will start patients off on conservative care treatment regimes. If these conservative methods fail to show any positive results, more aggressive forms of treatment may be recommended.
Conservative spinal stenosis treatments used in Brazil include physical therapy. Specialized therapist work on strengthening the muscles in your back. They will also take you through stretches to increase your flexibility.
Medication may be prescribed to help ease the pain. Drugs such as Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are used to ease pain and reduce swelling in the affected area. Epidural cortisone injections may be administered to reduce swelling around the nerve roots. These injections also ease pain.
Acupuncture and therapeutic massages are gaining popularity in Brazil for the treatment of pain caused by spinal stenosis. Therapeutic massages involve the direct application of pressure and friction on the muscles and tissues surrounding the afflicted nerves. This helps to ease the pressure on the nerves and increases the flow of blood to the area. Increased blood flow results in increased oxygen and nutrients in the area allowing for accelerated healing. Acupuncture involves the application of pressure on specific pressure points. This serves to stimulate the flow of blood to the afflicted area as well as helps the body relax.
When conservative methods have been administered for a period of more than 6 weeks without any observable results, more aggressive treatment methods are recommended. Decompression (Laminectomy) is an invasive surgical procedure involving the removal of the lamina (vertebrae) that is compressing the nerve. This creates more space in the spinal column and relieves the compression on the nerve. The surgery may take up to two hours. In some cases, patients may be released on the same day.
Laminoplasty involves the removal of a smaller piece of bone and not the entire vertebrae. This allows for the full range of motion in the area of removal to be maintained. In extreme cases spinal fusion involving the joining of two or more vertebrae may be recommended.
