Stenosis Symptoms
Spinal stenosis is a general term used to describe a condition that results from the narrowing of the spaces within the vertebral column. These spaces include all the holes and cavities through which the nerves and the spinal cord pass when traversing the spinal column including the spinal canal. The narrowing of these spaces in spinal stenosis results in exertion of pressure on the nerves and the spinal cord. This can cause extreme pain, loss of sensation in limbs, weakness in limbs, loss of bowel or bladder control as well as sexual function.
75% of the spinal stenosis cases are reported to have occurred
on the lower back region (the lumbar region).
Spinal Stenosis Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of spinal stenosis include:
- Pain in the legs, arms, hands and feet occurring when the patient is in certain positions i.e. nuerogenic claudication.
- Pain radiating from the sciatica, back of the neck
- Numbness, weakness and a tingling sensation in the legs or arms
- Problems with gait while walking e.g. foot drop, whereby you slap your feet while walking</li>
- Imbalance
- Interruption of bowel, urinary and sexual functions
Stenosis Diagnosis
Spinal stenosis can be diagnosed through a full physical examination in which the signs and symptoms of the disease are identified. However, the quickest and most accurate methods of diagnosis apply imaging. These diagnostic tools include x-rays of the spinal column, MRI, Bone scans, CT scans and myelograms.
Stenosis Management
Spinal stenosis management can be done through various approaches including:
- Administration of NSAIDS to alleviate inflammation and pain
- Use of analgesics in cases of extreme pain
- Resting and restricting activity to avoid placing pressure on the spinal column and the nerves
- Physical therapy i.e. therapeutic exercises and stretches
- Epidural injections
Surgical Treatment
Surgical treatment of spinal stenosis is employed only as a last resort. It is aimed at relieving the pressure being exerted on the nerves and the spinal cord. Surgical procedures include cervical spinal surgery and de-compressive lumbar laminectomy.
