Age Related Causes: Stenosis of the Spine

People hear about degenerative back diseases on TV or radio or read about it in the papers but do not take the time to think about them. Spinal stenosis is becoming an increasingly popular medical condition amongst the aged. Incidences of the disease are also increasing amongst younger people. In order to prevent something from happening it is important to understand why it happens in the first place.

The major causes of spinal stenosis are age related. Osteoarthritis is one of the major causes of spinal stenosis. The condition results from the formation of bone spurs between the spinal vertebrae. This spurs form as a result of the body attempting to repair degeneration that occurs with time between the joints of the vertebrae. Bone spurs are hard calciferous materials whose formation results in the reduction of space in the spinal canal.

Second Age Related Causes of Spinal Stenosis

The second age related cause of spinal stenosis is disk degeneration. In between the vertebrae in your back are discs filled with a jelly-like fluid that help to absorb shock and prevent damage to the spinal column. These discs have a tough outer covering that prevents leaking of the jelly like fluid. As you age these joints flatten and bulge. The tough outer covering of the discs begin to develop tears as a result of increased pressure. This results in the Jelly-like substance protruding from the disc. These protrusions can result in increased pressure on the spinal cord or nerves as they leave the spinal column.

Another age related cause of spinal stenosis is the thickening of ligaments in the back. Ligaments are the tough material that holds bones in joints together. The spine has several ligaments that hold the vertebrae together. These ligaments are required to maintain a certain level of flexibility. As people age however, the ligaments in the back become more rigid and thick. As they increase in thickness, they begin to bulge and may press onto the spine or nervous tissue.
